Kering To Welcome Emerging Female Creators

KERING TO WELCOME EMERGING FEMALE CREATORS

In line with the belief that creativity is a powerful vector for changing mindsets, Kering organizes a mentorship encounter aimed at 15 young female creators who will be selected based on their applications (details on the process below). On January 10, 2023, in Shanghai, the mentees will have the opportunity to spend a half-day discussion and inspiration session with three established artists from different fields: soprano Huang Ying, contemporary ink wash artist Peng Wei and contemporary dancer and choreographer Duan Ni.

This program aims to set up a platform for the next generation of female creators emerging in their fields of art to express themselves and learn from experts’ experience and insights. The afternoon will allow them to delve on topics around the creative process, such as inspiration, boosting creativity, career planning, as well as art’s values for society and individuals.

Please follow the Women In Motion WeChat Official Account and fill-in the key word “Mentorship Program” to apply. Application will be closed on December 5th, 2022.

The mentorship program will select 15 young female creators aged under 35 who are talented, and actively engaged in their creative careers. Selection criteria includes academic background, active years, creativity of works and professional achievements. Creative fields include but are not limited to visual arts, performing arts (dance, theater), film arts, music (classical and contemporary), literature, architecture and design.

In 2015, Kering launched Women In Motion at the Festival de Cannes with the ambition of highlighting women in cinema, both in front of and behind the camera. The program has since expanded in a major way to photography, but also to art, design, choreography and music, across multiple partnerships and initiatives over the world (Arles and Kyotographie Photography Festivals, the Women In Motion at Westbund project, etc.).

Since 2021, thanks to the WeChat subscription account, Women In Motion expands beyond seasonal events to offer a permanent content platform to tell inspiring stories of female creativity across film, music, dance, painting, architecture, literature, and new art.

Huang Ying: A renowned lyric coloratura soprano and opera artist, Huang Ying is the first Chinese vocalist to perform the leading lady in an opera movie. She has been acclaimed by featuring film Madame Butterfly. Since then, she has appeared in opera houses including the Metropolitan Opera, Cologne Opera House, Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels Belgium, Royal Danish Opera and China National Center of Performing Arts.

Peng Wei: A contemporary ink artist, Peng Wei is widely celebrated for expanding and subverting the classical Chinese ink painting tradition by bringing traditional and historical practice into dialogue with contemporary international art practices. Conjuring extraordinary realities by layering personal narratives across time, geography, and tradition, her work interrogates cultural identity, intellectual belonging, and issues of gender and sexuality. Since 2000, she has completed numerous series of work, which are executed across artistic mediums, such as painting, installation, video, and photography, grounded on the format and materiality of Chinese ink painting tradition.

Duan Ni: A dancer and choreographer, Duan Ni is the first Chinese modern dance dancer invited by international companies. Duan Ni embraced all the ideas and styles with her body’s inclusiveness, and she formed her own body language and traits. She has studied at the Modern Dance Choreography Department of Beijing Dance Academy (Guangdong branch), led by dance education pioneer Madame Yang Meiqi, and used to dance with Shanghai Jin Xing Dance Theatre, Akram Khan Company in London, and Shen Wei Dance Arts in New York. In 2008, she joined TAO Dance Theater as the Founding Dancer and Artistic Director of the company. In 2021, she participated to the first edition of the Women In Motion at West Bund project, to celebrate women’s creativity in dance and choreography

Creative Duet From Francis Kurkdjian And Klaus Mäkelä

CREATIVE DUET FROM FRANCIS KURKDJIAN AND KLAUS MäKELä

Fragrances and music have many shared affinities. When perfume creator Francis Kurkdjian meets conductor and cellist Klaus Mäkelä, the conversation becomes eminently creative. Inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cello Suite No. 2, the two artists share words, notes and emotions. Their scented and musical exchange is transformed into a moving sensorial experience, culminating in a very special concert.

On December 2, the Philharmonie de Paris featured notes from Klaus Mäkelä’s bow resonating with the scented notes created by Francis Kurkdjian. Backstage, the artists shared their impressions of Bach’s music. For each movement in Cello Suite No. 2, the Finnish cellist sought to translate into words the emotions he felt as a musician. Taking inspiration from these descriptions, the fragrance composer selected notes of patchouli, mandarin, musk and especially iris. “All of these very much smell like D minor, the key of this Suite. It is a very particular sound D Minor,” said Klaus Mäkelä. The alchemy of the musical and olfactory notes spawned new deep and melancholic emotions expressed by the talented musician, who is Music Director of the Orchestre de Paris.
